Hi, I’m Claire Sturzaker, the solo female traveller behind The Solo Travel Blog.
I took my first solo trip more than 20 years ago, and have tried everything from backpacking and work exchanges to van life, living abroad and being a digital nomad.
No matter how you want to travel or how much money you have I am here to help you to take the plunge. From planning your first solo trip to tips and tricks for making your money go further and how to travel alone safely, I’ve got you covered!
I’m originally from the UK and my first solo trip was a Work America trip to spend the summer working on a ranch in Wisconsin. I fell in love with solo travel and adored exploring new places and meeting new people. I studied French and Spanish at University and used my language skills to get to know people from different countries and cultures.
I left the UK after losing my job in 2012. I booked a one-way ticket to Barcelona and lived and worked there happily until I realised I wanted more for myself.
In 2015, I quit my job in Barcelona to go backpacking in South America, and knew I could never go back to an office job again. I had to find a way to support the travel lifestyle I wanted and began working online to fund my travels.
I grew my website Tales of a Backpacker into a leading backpacking blog, designed to help travellers to plan their best budget travel adventure.
I spent several years travelling the world, then COVID changed everything. I was stuck in the UK, so decided to buy a campervan and try van life for a while. It’s another style of solo travel that I loved doing for 3 years during the pandemic, and now I’m back to exploring the world alone.
I hope this blog inspires other people to travel – I have proved that women over 30 can travel solo too, and if I can do it, so can you!
Solo travel has helped me to rediscover myself and my lust for life which was somewhat lacking before. I didn’t know why I was unhappy until I realised how much of the world is out there for us to discover. Travelling alone can be scary, but it doesn’t need to be. Embrace it and enjoy!
The Solo Travel Blog is designed for everyone who wants to learn how to travel solo and enjoy solo travel adventures safely and sustainably.
Welcome!
Love Claire xx
